History
of Bethel
Bethel Christian
Life Center began in January 1984 as a home missions work of the Assemblies
of God, Indiana District. Our first worship services were held at the
University Inn on Cumberland Avenue in West Lafayette. Pastor William
McKee was called to be first pastor of Bethel.
During the
first year the church used a variety of facilities. Sunday AM service
was held at the University Inn while Sunday evening and Wednesday night
services were held at a small cement block building where Barrington West
apartments now sit. The building was affectionately called the "blue
lagoon" because of its bright blue walls and the fact that when it rained
the roof leaked. Not only did the building serve as a meeting place but
also as an office space for Pastor McKee.
In 1985
the congregation dedicated our current facility. The building was partially
completed when the congregation occupied it. Pastor McKee, a carpenter,
led the congregation in completing the original facility as well as building
the congregation. The congregation grew steadily from approx. 30
to more than 170 in 1991.
In 1990
Pastor McKee moved to the Indiana District office to be in charge of church
planting. Pastor Donald Osten was called from Carbondale Illinois to become
pastor of Bethel. During his time the church continued to grow to more
than 300 on a Sunday morning service. Also the church expanded the
facility with the addition of an education wing. It was also during this
time that Bethel began its childcare program for the community.
Over the
years the Bethel childcare program has had a profound impact on the community.
It not only provides for day-to-day needs of a growing community but it
allows the church to minister to the spiritual needs of people from around
the world. During the most recent year (2001) 155 families enrolled children
at Bethel Childcare, coming from 16 different countries; Argentina, China,
Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, Indian, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan,
Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, and the United States.
In 1998
Pastor Ted and Sue Brust were called to Bethel from Nebraska. Under their
directions Bethel continues to be a strong beacon for God in the West
Lafayette community. Our H.O.M.E. groups are growing in strength and numbers.
Bethel looks
forward to spreading the Word of God not only to our local community but
also through out the world.
